Zolmitriptan, a selective serotonin receptor agonist, is prescribed for migraines. It functions by constricting blood vessels in the brain, thereby alleviating migraine symptoms.

risk factors

Avoid administering to patients with heart disease, uncontrolled high blood pressure, cluster headache within 24 hours after the use of ergotamine derivative, and known hypersensitivity.

side effects

  • Most Common: Chest or throat pain/tightness, tingling sensations, flushing, weakness, drowsiness, dizziness, abdominal discomfort, sweating.
  • CNS: Agitation, anxiety, depression, emotional instability, insomnia, fainting.
  • Heart: Chest pain, abnormal heart rhythm, hypertension.
  • GI: Dry mouth, indigestion, difficulty swallowing, nausea, increased appetite, tongue swelling, esophageal inflammation, stomach flu, liver function abnormalities, increased thirst.
  • Blood: Bruising.
  • Respiratory: Bronchus/larynx inflammation, nosebleeds, hiccups.
  • Skin: Itching, rash, hives.
  • Eyes/ENT: Dry eye, eye pain, light sensitivity, ear pain, smell disturbances, tinnitus.
  • Genitourinary: Hematuria, kidney inflammation, increased urinary frequency/urgency.
  • Miscellaneous: Fever, chills, uneasiness, swelling in face, muscle pain.

dosage

Oral: The recommended dosage is 2.5 mg to 5 mg as a single dose.

how to take

It is available as a tablet to be taken orally, with or without food.

warning

  • Avoid concurrent use with monoamine oxidase inhibitors to prevent allergic reactions.
  • May cause dizziness or drowsiness; refrain from driving or operating machinery while using this medication.
  • Use caution in patients with a history of heart disease, menopause, poor blood supply, ischemic bowel disease, liver or kidney disease, respiratory issues, high blood pressure, diabetes, stroke, during pregnancy, and breastfeeding.
  • Increased risk of Serotonin Syndrome may occur, characterized by symptoms such as increased heart rate, shivering, sweating, dilated pupils, etc. Consult your healthcare provider if such symptoms arise.
