This medication is an antiarrhythmic prescribed for abnormal heart rhythms and also used for malaria. It affects the heart’s rhythm.
risk factors
Avoid in patients with myasthenia gravis, severe uncontrolled abnormal heart rhythms, or hypersensitivity to the medication.
side effects
- Most Common: Diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, heartburn, and elevated alkaline phosphatase levels.
- Central Nervous System: Lightheadedness, fatigue, weakness, nervousness, and lack of coordination.
- Heart: Palpitations.
- Eye and Ear, Nose, Throat: Hearing loss, deafness, blurred or double vision, light sensitivity, headache, and confusion
dosage
For adults:
- Arrhythmia: Oral dosage of 200-300 mg of the sulfate form, taken 3-4 times daily.
- Malaria: Oral dosage of 300-600 mg of the sulfate form, taken 3-4 times daily for 5-7 days.
how to take
It’s available in tablet and capsule forms for oral administration, to be taken by mouth with food.
warning
- Use caution in patients with a history of liver or kidney disease, heart failure, heart block, QT prolongation, low blood pressure, high or low blood calcium levels, decreased blood platelets, digitalis intoxication, allergies, those taking other medications, during pregnancy, and breastfeeding.
- This medication may cause dizziness or blurred vision. Avoid driving or operating machinery while taking it.
- Minimize sun exposure.
