This medication is a proton pump inhibitor prescribed for the management of duodenal ulcer, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome (excessive gastric acid secretion). It functions by reducing the production of acid in the stomach.

risk factors

The simultaneous administration of clarithromycin with pimozide and cisapride is contraindicated. Additionally, this medication is contraindicated in patients with a known hypersensitivity to it.

side effects

  • Central Nervous System: Headache, dizziness, disorientation/delirium.
  • Skin: Skin eruptions, severe allergic reactions.
  • Eye and ENT: Inflammation of the pharynx.
  • Gastrointestinal: Diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting, flatulence, constipation, abdominal pain, dry mouth.
  • Genitourinary: Kidney disorder.
  • Liver: Occurrence of confusion, altered level of consciousness, and coma as a result of liver failure (hepatic encephalopathy), inflammation of the liver, increased liver enzymes, jaundice.
  • Blood: Decrease in white blood cells, anemia.
  • Metabolic: Excess ammonia in the blood, elevations in thyroid-stimulating hormone.
  • Musculoskeletal: Joint pain, muscle pain, rapid breakdown of skeletal muscle.
  • Respiratory: Inflammation of lung tissue.
  • Miscellaneous: Pain, infection, rapid swelling of the dermis, coma, sudden death.

dosage

Oral administration:

  • Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease; erosive oesophagitis: A dose of 20 mg once daily in the morning is recommended for 4-8 weeks. Maintenance therapy involves a dose of 10-20 mg once daily.
  • For non-erosive oesophagitis: A dose of 10 mg once daily for 4 weeks, and upon symptom resolution, maintenance therapy may continue with 10 mg once daily as needed.
  • Healing of Duodenal Ulcers: A daily dose of 20 mg after the morning meal for a duration of 4 weeks. Additional therapy may be required for some patients.
  • Zollinger-Ellison syndrome: A recommended dose of 60 mg once daily, adjusted according to the patient’s needs.

how to take

It is available as a delayed-release (long-acting) tablet for oral administration. Typically, it is taken once a day for a duration of 4 to 8 weeks, and in some cases, it may be continued for a longer period. It can be taken with or without food.

warning

  • Exercise caution in patients with a history of bleeding ulcers, especially if there are symptoms such as black, tarry stools or vomit that resembles coffee grounds. If you experience throat pain, chest pain, severe stomach pain, or difficulty swallowing, contact your doctor immediately.
  • There may be an increased risk of gastrointestinal infections due to the acid-suppressive effects of the medication. Additionally, be aware of the potential for liver damage and the development of gastric tumors.
